Lake Bell is amazing. Every bit of work she does is better as a result of her being involved. That being gorgeous is the least of her talents is remarkable, especially today. She wrote and directed the film I just watched and loved, In a World…
Bell plays a freelance voice over coach and daughter to a voice over legend. She is both being held back and holding herself back from bigger things. On a chance she gets to do a movie trailer voice over and her career begins to take off. It is a man’s world and they, to include her father, are not happy about her breaking into their gig.
The film itself is amazing. Bell writes and gives a nuanced and realistic performance. She is well supported by some of today’s funniest actors: Michaela Watkins, Ken Marino, Demetri Martin, Rob Corddry, Nick Offerman, Tig Notaro, Stephanie Allynne, and Alexandra Holden. Fred Melamed is great as her father, and Cameron Diaz has a nice cameo.
The final act is a touch weak and the “message” speech given by Geena Davis is somehow off. The film’s point - that many women need to stop talking like “sexy babies” is well taken none the less. I highly recommend this movie.
I watched this movie at the Santikos Bijou Cinema Bistro.
